Zamil Steel - Vietnam jumps the gun on exports
Monday, 1st November 1999
Hanoi - Zamil Steel Buildings Vietnam Co., Ltd. has exported its first batch of products after just six months operation rather than three years as it first anticipated.
A subsidiary of Saudi Arabia's Zamil Steel Group, Zamil Steel Vietnam has exported 200 tones of steel to the Philippines. The company specializes in designing and manufacturing pre-engineered steel for use in commercial building construction.
Its factory in Vietnam is the third largest in the Zamil Steel family, with the first and second located in Saudi Arabia and Egypt respectively. Zamil Steel has chosen Vietnam as a springboard to enter the Asian and ASEAN markets by building its first factory here, said Mohammed Al-Khudhairi, general director of Zamil Steel Group.
Khudhairi said, support from Vietnamese Govt. has helped his company to make its first exports much quicker than originally forecast. The US $ 16 Million factory is located in the Noi Bhai Industrial Zone. It provides 100 jobs for the residents of Soe son, an economically depressed area on the outskirts of Hanoi.
Next year, the company plans to turn out 25,000 tones of steel products, 90 percent of which will be sold in the domestic market. Prior to the establishment of its factory, Zamil Steel was present in Vietnam for five years through representative offices. -- VNS
